The Message Behind JAY-Z’s “The Story of O.J.”

Today I want to talk about JAY-Z’s newest Gem. But before that I got to give him props for going platinum with his 13th studio album “4:44” within 5 days of release. If you didn’t get a chance to listen to “4:44” yet, you should definitely wait until it is available on Spotify and iTunes because it is really worth listening to it. But today I don’t want to focus on JAY-Z’s entire album.

Today I want to take a closer look at one track especially and if you are a clever reader you might as well have already figured out which track I’m talking about. It’s “The Story of O.J.”. So without further ado let’s get to it.

The first thing you notice is the sound. Some say it sounds like elevator music but if this really would be elevator music you would find me riding the elevator 24/7 because it’s just so nice and relaxing to listen to.

Once you go deeper and actually focus on the lyrics the hidden gem gets uncovered.

“Light nigga, dark nigga, faux nigga, real nigga
Rich nigga, poor nigga, house nigga, field nigga
Still nigga, still nigga”

But Maurizius what does that actually mean? I am just seeing the N-word a lot. Well, glad you are asking!
He critisizes that in a society/system of white supremacy you are at the end of the day still a “nigger”. No matter how unsuccessful or successful you might have become over the course of your life time. Point-blank.

“I bought every V12 engine
Wish I could take it back to the beginnin’
I coulda bought a place in Dumbo before it was Dumbo
For like 2 million
That same building today is worth 25 million
Guess how I’m feelin’? Dumbo”

“You wanna know what’s more important than throwin’ away money at a strip club? Credit”

“Financial freedom my only hope
Fuck livin’ rich and dyin’ broke
I bought some artwork for 1 million
2 years later, that shit worth 2 million
Few years later, that shit worth 8 million”

Financial freedom is what we’re all after. We don’t really want the life of the rich but just the freedom they have. If you have read my latest book recommendation post, you’ll see that Tony Robbin’s “Unshakable” will give you the perfect guide to achieve exactly that. What JAY-Z is telling us is that instead of buying unnecessary stuff just to flaunt (on social media) you should start investing your money wisely. Invest in assets that will yield long term results like artwork, real estate, bonds etc. By doing that you make sure that you not only live rich but die rich as well. Like he said “Fuck livin’ rich and dyin’ broke”.

“I told him, “Please don’t die over the neighborhood
That your mama rentin’
Take your drug money and buy the neighborhood
That’s how you rinse it””

Last thing I want to focus on is that you should invest in your community. Why is that? Well, to provide jobs, security, and economic empowerment for the one’s you care about.

Now some might say this is all common sense but really who are you kidding? As with anything in life one doesn’t know anything unless he educates himself on those topics. And then there is still a huge difference between knowing something and actually turning it into reality.

Hope I could really lay out the greatness of this song for you and that you will implement some of this for your future well being.

Oh and of course you can give it a listen right now down below. Did I mention that the visuals are really impressing too?

Midsummer Book Recommendations

Since we are currently in the middle of summer and I’ve done a lot of reading since my last book recommendation round I thought it would be time to share with you some of the books that left a mark on me since.

1. Tools of Titans – Tim Ferriss

Tim really delivers an allrounder with this one. No matter whether health, wealth or wisdom Tim has got you covered with all of these topics in this brilliant book thanks to the guests, ranging from our beloved Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger to my favorite Author Paulo Coelho, that have appeared on his Podcast. You are looking for advice? I am sure Tim has got you covered with this masterpiece. If you can’t get enough of Tim’s writing, his books “The 4-Hour Workweek” and “The 4-Hour Body” are worth a read too.

2. Unshakable – Tony Robbins

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Tony immediately check out his documentary “I Am Not Your Guru” on Netflix or look him up on YouTube. He really is an energised, happy, passionate, and wise animal. With “Unshakable” Tony Robbins delivers the perfect guide to financial freedom for the average person. It’s an easy, detailed, and well written step-by-step guide to money mastery. So for all of you who are struggling with money or want to have money way beyond retirement this book is for you. And if you want to get an even deeper look into this topic, make sure to check out his book “Money”.

3. Elon Musk – Ashlee Vance

This book does three things to you. First of all it shows you what an insane, and persistent workaholic Elon Musk is. Second it let’s all your problems and probably your entire existence seem useless because who needs us when there is Elon Musk. Third it motivates and inspires you. It was three in the morning when I finished this hell of a book and I will tell you I was never in my life more motivated to save mankind while building rockets and driving around in my (imaginary) fancy Tesla while feeling like Iron Man. Because honestly Elon Musk is just the real world’s Tony Stark. Give this book a try you will either never do anything in your life anymore or you will want to change the world and try all the things at once. There is no in between.

4. Der Club der Traumtänzer – Andreas Izquierdo

This book is for all my german readers and those capable of the German language. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find an English copy so it seems like this book is only available in German right now. Nethertheless I still wanted to share it with you. This book was gifted to me so naturally I hesitated to read it because the story seemed to be very predictable.I rather finished four books until I finally read it. I never regretted it more in my life to have waited to read a book. I finished it in one sitting because the story was just so well written and the book was an easy read too. So if you are looking for an entertaining and easy to read book while relaxing and tanning, this is my recommendation for you.

The Sound that will Inspire You

Today I want to share with you the music I listen to whenever I need inspiration or just want to live in the moment. This is the sound that really connects with me. Listen to it when you are alone, when you are laying under the night sky, when you just need an escape, or when you just want to be happy. Play it and forget the rest for a moment. Only when we are living in the moment we are really alive. Hope you enjoy this mix!

Please note that these books were not published in 2016 but I have read them throughout 2016.

7. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe – Benjamin Alire Sáenz

This book feels like real life with small but important events happening. This book is about loving yourself and everything around you. It is about the teenage condition and mentality.  It is about the most important things in life and life itself. It is packed with tons of emotions and you will fall in love with it while reading more and more of it. Essentially, it will appeal to everyone who has ever felt different, who has ever felt like they were not sure of who they were. You will discover the secrets of the Universe.

“I got to thinking that poems were like people. Some people you got right off the bat. Some people you just didn’t get–and never would get.”
― Benjamin Alire Sáenz, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

6. The Big Five for Life – John Strelecky

Probably best for CEO´s or people that have a say and/or can change something in their company and for people who want to start a company. However everyone else will learn a lot of lessons too. This book makes you question your life decisions a lot. But makes you also realize that time is very precious and that it can never be regained. Live your life like it would be on display in a museum. What I learned from this book is that in the end everything is as it is and not as you wished it has been.

“Choose to work on things you are passionate about and you will always be passionate about what you are working on.” – John Strelecky, The Big Five for Life

5. The Humans – Matt Haig

“The Humans” is a fun to read novel about alien abduction, mathematics, and that most interesting subject of all: ourselves. This book not only helps you to understand yourself better but to understand us, humans, better. After reading this you will probably see yourself and everyone around you through different eyes. This book is a great start to change the way you interact with others.

“You can’t find happiness looking for the meaning of life. Meaning is only the third most important thing. It comes after loving and being.” – Matt Haig, The Humans

4. The Why Café – John Strelecky

This book kicked off the second half of 2016 just perfect for me. After doubting and questioning myself and my decisions a lot, I found this book at the perfect moment. It really helped me to reconsider and reevalute my life and the choices I had made. Without this book you probably would  not be reading this right now.

“The challenge,…is to realize that something is fulfilling because we individually determine it is fulfilling, not becasue someone else tells us it is.” – John Strelecky, The Why Café

3. Return to The Why Café – John Strelecky

This is the sequel to “The Why Café”. Maybe it was the different setting. Maybe it were the different characters. Maybe it was just me. I liked this one better than the prequel. Filled with even more life lessons and advice this one is perfect for you if you need more after reading “The Why Café”. If you need strength from the outside to follow your own path this series is a great choice for you.

“Why are you here?” – John Strelecky, Return to The Why Café

2. Reasons to Stay Alive – Matt Haig

This book is for everyone who has dealt with suicidal thoughts, knows someone with sucidial thoughts, or just needs a reminder that life is worth living. The more pages you read the more you start loving life. It is filled with wisdom and inspiration. This is more than a self-help book or a book that teaches you how to get rid of depression. This book makes you live depression. It is one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read.

“I am you and you are me. We are alone, but not alone. We are trapped by time, but also infinite. Made of flesh, but also stars.”

― Matt Haig, Reasons to Stay Alive

1. The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho

So here is my number one and absolute favorite book of probably all time. This book is filled with quotes and wisdom. It has a really special place in my heart because it shifted my life to the next level. It is perfect for those who need motivation or approval to follow their dreams.
